Appellate Writing Workshop for Federal Defenders

Through both plenary discussions and small-group exercises, this workshop provides in-depth instruction in legal writing. Each participant writes a brief in advance of the program using a provided sample case file. A particularly valuable segment of the program is a panel discussion with U.S. court of appeals judges in which the judges provide guidance on what they find persuasive in appellate advocacy.

National Conference for Federal Defender Capital Habeas Units

This conference is designed for federal defender capital habeas unit (CHU) attorneys, paralegals, investigators, and mitigation specialists. It includes a variety of topics relevant to capital habeas work, such as updates on legal issues, case management, mitigation, and forensics.

National Seminar for Federal Defenders

This annual seminar is designed for assistant federal defenders who have been practicing criminal law for a minimum of three years. Topics include substantive federal criminal law, trial tactics, evidence, computer technology, ethics, and sentencing issues.

Orientation Seminar for Assistant Federal Defenders

This seminar for new assistant federal defenders includes a mix of topics on substantive federal criminal law, sentencing, trial tactics, evidence, and ethics.
