March 3, 1837
In response to the admission of eight western states between 1812 and 1837, Congress reorganized the Seventh Circuit to include Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, assigned Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri to the new Eighth Circuit, and placed Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi in the new Ninth Circuit. In accordance with these changes, two new seats were added to the Supreme Court.
