As part of its educational mission, the Center produces monographs on substantive legal subjects and a variety of manuals and guides for judges and court staff. Topics covered include discrete areas of law, courtroom and case-management procedures, the Federal Rules, and different types of litigation. Manual on Recurring Problems in Criminal Trials, Sixth Edition

The Manual on Recurring Problems in Criminal Trials (6th ed.) outlines the law governing many of the specific issues and procedural matters that arise frequently in criminal trials. The Sixth Edition added new material and revised the organization and format to enhance usability. Among the topics covered are pro se representation, jury-related matters, disclosure, evidentiary issues, contempt, confessions, and multiple defendants. Circuit splits are also noted.

Immigration Law: A Primer

This monograph provides an introduction to and overview of immigration law, with a focus on analyzing issues that arise in litigation. It sets out the legislative history, explains the statutory and administrative regime, and describes the substantive and procedural law relevant to federal judges, including circuit splits. Topics covered include the Real ID Act and its effect on judicial review, categories of admissibility, asylum, deportation, removal, relief, waiver, and remedies.

Mediation & Conference Programs in the Federal Courts of Appeals: A Sourcebook for Judges and Lawyers, Second Edition

This sourcebook is a reference guide on mediation and settlement conference programs in the thirteen federal courts of appeals. The Federal Judicial Center published the first edition of this sourcebook in 1997. The changing structure of these programs, and expressed interest from the courts of appeals, made this update necessary.
