In 1975, Congress authorized the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts to establish, on a demonstration basis, pretrial services agencies in ten judicial districts. The agencies were to supervise and provide support to criminal defendants released from custody while awaiting trial. In 1982, Congress extended the pretrial services program on a nationwide basis.
