Nominated by Jimmy Carter on May 17, 1979, to a new seat authorized by 92 Stat. 1629. Confirmed by the Senate on October 31, 1979, and received commission on November 2, 1979. Served as chief judge, 1996-1998. Assumed senior status on December 31, 1998. Service terminated on November 4, 2017, due to death.
