Nominated by Franklin D. Roosevelt on May 20, 1935, to a seat vacated by Charles B. Faris. Confirmed by the Senate on May 28, 1935, and received commission on May 29, 1935. Served as chief judge, 1948-1959. Assumed senior status on January 19, 1962. Service terminated on November 5, 1962, due to death.
