Nominated by Franklin D. Roosevelt on June 18, 1937, to a seat vacated by George P. Hahn. Confirmed by the Senate on June 22, 1937, and received commission on August 20, 1937. Served as chief judge, 1959-1960. Assumed senior status on September 30, 1964. Service terminated on March 11, 1976, due to death.
