Nominated by Jimmy Carter on August 29, 1977, to a seat vacated by Benjamin Cushing Duniway. Confirmed by the Senate on September 15, 1977, and received commission on September 15, 1977. Served as chief judge, 1996-2000. Assumed senior status on January 1, 2002. Service terminated on November 30, 2017, due to retirement.
