Nominated by Lyndon B. Johnson on April 30, 1964, to a seat vacated by L. Richardson Preyer. Confirmed by the Senate on May 27, 1964, and received commission on June 9, 1964. Served as chief judge, 1971-1982. Assumed senior status on July 12, 1982. Service terminated on May 4, 2002, due to death.
