Received a recess appointment from Franklin Pierce on July 18, 1853, to a seat vacated by John Glenn; nominated to the same position by Franklin Pierce on December 19, 1853. Confirmed by the Senate on January 11, 1854, and received commission on January 11, 1854. Service terminated on March 21, 1879, due to death.
