Nominated by Jimmy Carter on September 27, 1978, to a seat vacated by Alexander A. Lawrence. Confirmed by the Senate on October 10, 1978, and received commission on October 11, 1978. Served as chief judge, 1990-1997. Assumed senior status on August 2, 2006. Service terminated on May 9, 2015, due to death.
