Nominated by Franklin D. Roosevelt on January 3, 1945, to a seat vacated by Bascom S. Deaver. Confirmed by the Senate on January 29, 1945, and received commission on January 30, 1945. Served as chief judge, 1949-1961. Assumed senior status on June 30, 1961. Service terminated on May 19, 1969, due to death.
