Nominated by John F. Kennedy on July 24, 1961, to a new seat authorized by 75 Stat. 80. Confirmed by the Senate on August 9, 1961, and received commission on August 10, 1961. Served as chief judge, 1965-1968. Service terminated on August 2, 1968, due to appointment to another judicial position.

Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit
Nominated by Lyndon B. Johnson on July 17, 1968, to a seat vacated by Elbert Parr Tuttle. Confirmed by the Senate on July 25, 1968, and received commission on July 25, 1968. Assumed senior status on September 1, 1978. Service terminated on October 1, 1981, due to reassignment.

Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit
Reassigned on October 1, 1981, to a new seat authorized by 94 Stat. 1994. Service terminated on November 15, 2001, due to death.
