Nominated by Lyndon B. Johnson on July 17, 1968, to a seat vacated by Frank M. Scarlett. Confirmed by the Senate on July 25, 1968, and received commission on July 25, 1968. Served as chief judge, 1970-1976. Assumed senior status on August 2, 1978. Service terminated on August 20, 1979, due to death.
