Nominated by Ronald Reagan on October 20, 1981, to a seat vacated by Fred J. Nichol. Confirmed by the Senate on November 18, 1981, and received commission on November 18, 1981. Served as chief judge, 1991-1994. Assumed senior status on January 1, 1995. Service terminated on January 30, 2023, due to death.
