Nominated by Jimmy Carter on August 28, 1978, to a seat vacated by Willis W. Ritter. Confirmed by the Senate on September 20, 1978, and received commission on September 22, 1978. Served as chief judge, 1984-1993. Assumed senior status on September 30, 1994. Service terminated on November 7, 2023, due to death.
