Nominated by Richard M. Nixon on November 11, 1971, to a seat vacated by James L. Oakes. Confirmed by the Senate on November 23, 1971, and received commission on November 30, 1971. Served as chief judge, 1972-1983. Assumed senior status on January 29, 1984. Service terminated on November 18, 1996, due to death.
