Nominated by Richard M. Nixon on February 16, 1972, to a seat vacated by William G. Juergens. Confirmed by the Senate on March 2, 1972, and received commission on March 7, 1972. Served as chief judge, 1978-1979. Service terminated on March 31, 1979, due to reassignment.

Reassigned on March 31, 1979, to a new seat authorized by 93 Stat. 6. Served as chief judge, 1979-1992. Assumed senior status on June 1, 1992. Service terminated on June 3, 2012, due to death.
