The Federal Courts Improvement Act of 1982 merged the U.S. Court of Customs and Patent Appeals and the U.S. Court of Claims to form the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Of the twelve judgeships authorized for the Federal Circuit, five were from the U.S. Court of Customs and Patent Appeals and seven from the U.S. Court of Claims.
