Congress established the U.S. Circuit Court for the District of Rhode Island and assigned the district to the Eastern Circuit.

The Judiciary Act of 1801 established six regional circuit courts to replace the circuit courts organized by judicial districts. The Act placed the District of Rhode Island under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Circuit Court for the First Circuit.

Congress repealed the Judiciary Act of 1801 and restored the organization of the judiciary in effect before 1801, thereby re-establishing the U.S. Circuit Court for the District of Rhode Island.

Judiciary Act of 1802 assigned the District of Rhode Island to the First Circuit.
