Search syntax

Example Description Results
judiciary act Enter the key words judiciary act to do a general search for resources that mention judiciary act The results will include:
  • all resources containing the word judiciary and the word act
  • but not necessarily both judiciary and act
  • and not necessarily the exact phrase judiciary act
"judiciary act of 1801" Use quotes around your key words to find resources that contain the exact phrase judiciary act of 1801 The results will include:
  • resources containing the exact phrase judiciary act of 1801
jury AND indictment
 
jury + indictment
Use the Boolean search operator AND (in capitals) to find resources that must contain two or more key words. You can also use + (the "plus" sign). The results will include:
  • resources containing both jury and indictment
ADR OR "Alternative Dispute Resolution" Use the Boolean search operator OR (in capitals) to broaden your search to include results that contain either of your key words.

OR is a good tool to use when there are several common spellings or synonyms of a phrase, as in this example.

The results will include:
  • resources containing either ADR OR Alternative Dispute Resolution
  • but not necessarily both
"election litigation" NOT polling Use the Boolean search operator NOT or (the "minus" sign) to narrow your search to exclude results that contain a key word. You can also exclude a phrase by using quotes. The results will include:
  • resources on election litigation that do not involve polling place issues
