Preliminary Report on Time Study Class Action Cases

A random national sample of 8,320 civil cases filed between November 1987 and January 1990 in 86 federal district courts included 51 cases involving class action allegations in the complaint or judicial action in response to class action activity. The incidence of class actions was 61 class actions per 10,000 cases.

Policies of the Parole Commission and the Bureau of Prisons as They Affect the Judge's Sentencing Opinions

This paper is an introduction to understanding the relationship between a judge's sentence of imprisonment and the actions of those agencies that have responsibility for an offender after sentencing. It deals principally with policies affecting the duration of an offender's incarceration, and also includes some discussion of policies affecting the offender's experience while incarcerated.

Planning for the Future: Results of a 1992 Federal Judicial Center Survey of United States Judges

Results from the Center's 1992 survey of nearly all federal judges on a wide range of issues of concern to the federal courts. The survey was conducted primarily to inform the deliberations of the Judicial Conference Committee on Long Range Planning and to inform the Center's congressionally mandated study of structural alternatives for the courts of appeals. Results of that study were published in [Structural and Other Alternatives for the Federal Courts of Appeals] (1993), which is also available through this catalog.

Pilot Project on Communicating Automatic Typewriters: Evaluation Report

In response to concerns expressed about delay in transmission of proposed opinions and emergency motion papers among the widely-scattered judges of the Temporary Court of Emergency Appeals (TECA), the Federal Judicial Center conducted a pilot project experimenting with the use of IBM Magnetic Card Selectric Typewriters and Western Electric 103A Data-Set equipment with communication capabilities over telephone lines.

Pattern Criminal Jury Instructions: Report of the Subcommittee on Pattern Jury Instructions, Committee on the Operation of the Jury System, Judicial Conference of the United States, Second Edition

These instructions were prepared initially by a Federal Judicial Center committee in 1982 and revised in 1987 by the former Subcommittee on Pattern Jury Instructions of the former Judicial Conference Committee on the Operation of the Jury System. Many courts have since drafted instructions based on the pattern jury instructions.  The Center has neither maintained nor updated these instructions since 1987 and we retain them in our collection for historical interest. They do not necessarily reflect the current state of the law.

These instructions were prepared initially by a Federal Judicial Center committee in 1982 and revised in 1987 by the former Subcommittee on Pattern Jury Instructions of the former Judicial Conference Committee on the Operation of the Jury System. They have not been updated nor revised. staff include suggestions for drafters of jury instructions.
