Nominated by Dwight D. Eisenhower on August 21, 1957, to a seat vacated by W. Lynn Parkinson. Confirmed by the Senate on August 22, 1957, and received commission on August 26, 1957. Served as chief judge, 1961-1972. Assumed senior status on December 1, 1972. Service terminated on March 2, 1998, due to death.
