Nominated by Jimmy Carter on June 5, 1979, to a new seat authorized by 92 Stat. 1629. Confirmed by the Senate on July 23, 1979, and received commission on July 24, 1979. Served as chief judge, 1996-1999. Assumed senior status on October 8, 1999. Service terminated on August 4, 2011, due to death.
