Received a recess appointment from Harry S Truman on October 14, 1946, to a seat vacated by Jesse C. Adkins; nominated to the same position by Harry S Truman on January 8, 1947. Confirmed by the Senate on January 22, 1947, and received commission on January 24, 1947. Served as chief judge, 1966-1966. Assumed senior status on November 1, 1966. Service terminated on April 13, 1986, due to death.
