Confirmed by the Senate on February 3, 1846, and received commission on February 3, 1846. Service terminated on December 14, 1855, due to appointment to another judicial position.

Received a recess appointment from Franklin Pierce on November 27, 1855, to a seat vacated by William Cranch; nominated to the same position by Franklin Pierce on December 3, 1855.
