Received a recess appointment from Abraham Lincoln on October 16, 1861, to a seat vacated by Thomas Monroe; nominated to the same position by Abraham Lincoln on December 9, 1861. Confirmed by the Senate on January 22, 1862, and received commission on January 22, 1862. Service terminated on July 29, 1879, due to death.
